10th April 2006 - Iron Age entrance re-opened at High Pasture Cave (10/04/2006)

On Wednesday 5th April, archaeologists working at the High Pasture’s site excavated through the remaining deposits of stone and sediments in the base of the stairwell, and entered the natural cave - the first time the entrance had been used since the Iron Age, over 2000 years agao. Large granite slabs uncovered in Trench 2 (14/07/2005)

The excavations in Trench 2 on the High Pastures site are now in excess of three metres in depth, where two large granite slabs have been uncovered. Are these slabs the roof lintels for the former entrance into Bone Passage in the cave? Read on for more news of this discovery, progress in Trench 3 and links to the latest finds.

Hearth settings excavated in Trench 2 (29/06/2005)

Fine, dry and sunny weather over the last few days has resulted in good progress at the High Pastures site. We have recovered some exciting finds from the Trench 2 extension and have exposed two large granite slabs below the hearth settings.  These may be the roof slabs covering the original passage into the cave. Torrential rain results in some delay in progress at the High Pastures site (06/06/2005)

Heavy and prolonged rain resulted in some delay with the excavation at the High Pastures site last week, with only two days work at the beginning of the week.  However, with help from our volunteers we have been able to open up new trenches to investigate other aspects of the site.  Read on for more details and images.

25th May 2005 - New trench opened at High Pastures, while new features are revealed in Trench 2 (25/05/2005)

Trench 2 continues to reveal some interesting features including possible structural elements and evidence of some type of fire, set directly on top of a horizontal slab of stone. Features immediately to the northwest of Trench 2. Read on for a full report and the latest digital images.

Improved weather conditions have assisted the excavation of Trench 2 at the High Pastures site.  Several new finds and features have been recovered.

22nd - 24th March: Fine weather and more results from Trench 2 (27/03/2005)

Improved weather conditions, including some sunshine!, resulted in the archaeologists resuming their work at the High Pastures site.  Progress in Trench 2 continues and an hearth setting is uncovered in the northwest sector abutting the tumbled granite wall.

Weather halts work on Trench 2 (27/03/2005)

Heavy rain and strong winds hindered excavation work at the High Pastures site between the 11th and 20th March.  Little progress was made in Trench 2.  However, we hope to be back on site by the 22nd March.


7th - 10th March: Work Continues on Trench 2 (27/03/2005)

The excavation of Trench 2 continues and several artefacts are recovered, including sherds of prehistoric pottery, a fragment of a flint arrowhead and a stone spindle whorl.

Now that this project has started we thought it was time to provide a web site for all the information and pictures we want to share with you.  And here it is.  It is early days yet and we intend to have sections on the cave itself, the work we plan to do, the timescales we are working to, latest findings etc.
